The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Friday inaugurated two Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centres it established in two secondary schools in Imo, under its Digital Awareness Project
The benefiting schools are Enyiogugu Secondary School, Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area and Community Secondary School, Abajah, Nwangele Local Government Area.
Each of the centres is equipped with 20 desktop computers, branded computer table chairs, a server, a 16.5 KVA generator set and a VSAT connection with a one year internet bandwidth supply.
Inaugurating the projects, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr Eugene Juwah, said the ICT were meant to avail the students with the `enormous learning resources’ available on the internet.
Represented by Dr Michael Onyia, a member of the commission’s board, Juwah said that the project would improve the students’ ICT skills and knowledge.
He said the two schools were among the 230 others that had so far benefited from the programme.
He said the commission had a similar programme called `Advanced Digital Awareness Programme for tertiary institutions, adding that 222 institutions had benefited from this programme.
The executive vice chairman said that 93 other tertiary institutions had benefited from NCC ‘Wireless Cloud’ programme.
In his speech at the occasion, Gov. Rochas Okorocha, reminded the students of the importance of computer education.
He said that the knowledge of ICT was necessary for an individual to perform well in his field of endeavour.
Represented by Mrs Ngizi Njoku, the Director, Imo Foundation, Okorocha urged the students to take advantage of the centre to improve their knowledge.
He urged members of the communities, where the benefiting schools were located, to protect the facilities and ensure their maintenance and sustainability.
Okorocha, while commending NCC for the gesture, said the project would complement his free education programme.
The Principal of Enyiogugu Secondary School, Mr Lambert Njoku, thanked the NCC for establishing the centre and pledged that the school would protect the facilities and put them to proper use.
