ICT Will Strengthen Access To Information

Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson has said that access to government information would be facilitated by Information Communication Technology (ICT), especially the new social media such as facebook, twitter and blogs.

She said this at the formal inauguration of a monthly lecture series in Abuja, adding that the ministry would continue to work with other ministries, departments and agencies to bring more government data sets online, even before they are asked for.

Also speaking, the deputy chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Reform of Government Institutions, said that the enactment of the FoI Act took Nigeria into a global reckoning as one of the countries in the world to embrace freedom of information legislation, even as he urged the ministry to speed up the implementation of the Act.

“I enjoin the ministry to serve as a catalyst for the speedy implementation of the FoI Act by designing a template for itself and other ministries, departments and agencies on how to use ICT tools for the promotion and implementation of the Act,” he said.
